As the global mobility sector navigates a period of rapid yet uneven transformation, the gap between technological promise and real-world deployment is becoming increasingly visible. Autonomous vehicles continue to dominate industry discourse, but their rollout \u2013particularly within public transport in Europe \u2013 has proven slower and more complex than many anticipated. At the same time, innovation is accelerating in adjacent domains, from freight automation to advanced drone applications and AI-driven logistics.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Sigma Dolins, Industrial PhD and Researcher in Mobility Transformation at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, operates at the intersection of academic research and industry implementation \u2013 offering a dual perspective on the forces reshaping the automotive and transport ecosystem. Ahead of moderating sessions at VECS 2026, Sigma highlights not only the technological shifts underway, but also the structural, political and commercial realities influencing their pace.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the unanswered revenue questions surrounding software-defined vehicles to the geopolitical barriers affecting technology deployment, Sigma argues that mobility transformation must be understood holistically \u2013 across policy, business models, human behavior and infrastructure readiness. With a focus on candid dialogue and audience engagement, the sessions ahead aim to challenge industry assumptions and move the conversation beyond innovation hype toward operational impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

From your perspective as an industrial PhD and researcher, what are the most significant shifts currently reshaping mobility transformation across the automotive and transport ecosystem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Autonomous mobility is still coming, but it’s coming slower \u2013 in Sweden and in Europe \u2013 for the public transport industry than we would have like. It is, however, going faster in the freight and drone applications. Particularly in underwater and undersea drone applications! AI will continue to enter the transportation industry and in connected areas \u2013 food production, environmental crisis management \u2013 all of which will impact how goods and people are handled.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a moderator at VECS 2026, what themes or questions do you believe will be most critical to challenge the audience and move the discussion beyond technology into real-world impact?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Software defined vehicles are still the focus, but some great questions would be: Where do you actually make money in an SDV world? Who pays for updates and failures? Another issue is how different companies in the same field are approaching governments and authorities. For example, if a bunch of automakers get together and as an organization ask the government for permit pathways, everyone wins in the end because it is easier for the government to respond to larger and standardized requests than it is to have each organization make its own network connections. In its defense, The Swedish Transport Administration has done a lot to make this easier for more companies in the past year. But sometimes it feels as though companies are afraid to say what they need help with, besides saying they need more investment, because then they would reveal the weaknesses in their strategy or product. The irony is that often these issues are not unique, at least from what I’ve seen. I am not up to date on the speaker list, but if MOIA comes again, I would be very interested in asking “What changes between operating 5 vehicles and 500 \u2013 and who pays for that transition?” <\/em>And regarding drones, which I am just starting to work with, I would want to ask: What data do regulators, operators, and cities actually need, and what are drone companies unwilling to share?<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

You work at the intersection of research and industry. Where do you see the biggest gap today between academic insights and practical implementation in vehicle and mobility transformation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oops, maybe I answered this earlier. But we still have gaps in how we deploy innovation mobility and, in Sweden, I strongly feel we are limiting ourselves when we let political decisions govern which technology providers we can work with. What has happened with the Swedish stance against American or Chinese providers is that we are falling very far behind in deploying AV technology ourselves. Even Belgium is getting further ahead now. I completely understand the concerns around using American or Chinese tech, I just feel the issue is better to address by using it and looking for the vulnerabilities rather than avoiding using it at all. So, what has happened is that we have used Turkish technology because it’s the least politically problematic, but it is also nowhere near as good as Chinese or American tech. This is a type of social acceptance that frankly, I didn’t consider during my PhD but I see it as an enormous barrier now.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mobility transformation involves technology, policy, business models and human behaviour. Which of these dimensions do you think is most underestimated \u2013 and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, they’re all underestimated in a way. The issue is to look at all of them holistically, and it\u2019s very difficult for any stakeholder to do that. Business models perhaps get too much attention \u2013 it’s not because I think everything should be free, but because people are looking for guaranteed returns within a 6-month time frame, and that’s not possible, especially within public transport. Human behavior and policy need to be explored more, and how they function together \u2013 how policy can support the best and worst of human behavior \u2013 should be what shapes the technology. Business models can come last when you have a functioning system that serves society. However, both my questions for VECS speakers reflect that everyone coming to these conferences is very concerned about financing. I really do understand the need to get paid today! So, it’s difficult to get the whole ecosystem to take a long-term view, especially in today’s volatile political climate.<\/p>\n

What are you most looking forward to moderating at VECS 2026, and what do you hope participants will take away from the discussions you lead?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think people come to VECS to hear the leaders of big brands or cutting-edge companies give them hints about what is coming next. There’s always hopeful energy in the convention center! And it’s fun when speakers give honest, straightforward answers \u2013 even their off-color opinions, rather than just the kinds of polished statements you see in press releases.<\/p>\n
