From Vision to Reality: Hamburg’s Blueprint for Autonomous Public Mobility

What are the important steps for implementing Autonomous Public Mobility? It is a privilege for us to present one of the speakers in Track B Autonomous Solutions & Active Safety on the second day of VECS 2025. Tim Knutzen is Team Lead Grant & Project Management Autonomous and Digital Mobility at New Mobility Solutions Hamburg in Germany. With a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Stuttgart and experience developing autonomous mobility concepts at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), he brings a deep understanding of connected and autonomous vehicles, cooperative systems, and innovative mobility solutions. In his current role, Tim secures funding and oversees cutting-edge projects that are shaping the future of transportation, all while supporting Hamburg’s vision of becoming a model city for digital mobility and a safer, climate-neutral future. We got the opportunity to ask Mr Knutzen a few rapid-fire questions prior to the event.

What will you speak about at VECS 2025?

The title of my presentation is “From Vision to Reality: Hamburg’s Blueprint for Autonomous Public Mobility”. I will address the Sustainable Urban Future with Autonomous Mobility as a solution to reduce congestion, emissions, and improve accessibility, positioning Hamburg as a leader in innovative transportation. I will also present Hamburg’s Vision for Autonomous Mobility which includes Integrating a large electric AV fleet into a holistic public transit system, making transport accessible within 5 minutes for all. Finally, I will talk about Roadmap to AV Deployment – Hamburg’s strategic approach, including publicly funded projects, legal frameworks, and citizen participation, to ensure smooth AV integration.

What are the important steps for implementing Autonomous Public Mobility?

You need to build an ecosystem for the introduction of autonomous mobility solutions with strong collaboration, a supportive framework and environment.

How can we increase collaboration between academia, industry and society to implement AV at a larger scale?

The best way is to start with Co-creation projects, e.g. at European level such as Eu Horizon projects like MODI.

What are the next steps to position Hamburg as a leader in innovative transportation?

Establish an AV ecosystem and a clear roadmap for autonomous mobility solutions with ambitious goals and realisable business approaches. Putting solutions safely on the road to test and develop autonomous mobility services.

What is the most important thing you would like to share in your presentation?

Emphasise that collaboration is key!

What are you most looking forward to by attending and speaking at the event?

I am looking forward to meeting great people from the Scandinavian region and exchanging ideas and experiences in AV deployment.
